The Nokia N82 Blog: What’s Your Next Device? Nokia N86, N97, Or Waiting It Out? Why No Xenon?

  • davemitchell · 4 months ago
Certainly lack of Xenon is one of the hardest hurdles I feel I have to cross when it comes to upgrading. But there are other factors as well. So much appealed to me about the N97 initially, but then the reviews started to pour in and until I can see one in my hands I'll admit to being very cautious about that route.

I was sadly disappointed by the launch of Ovi Store as well. App selection is the only jealously I have towards the IPhone.

I've honestly been keeping an eye on the Sony Erricson Experia 'Rachael' phone...

They problem is I really like my N82, but over the last year I've not see the platform growing the way I would like in terms of market adoption.
  • Mike Macias · 4 months ago
Well, the N97 has a lot more apps available in the Ovi Store than the N82. And a lot of them are "gimmicky" like the Apple Store. As far as the lack of xenon goes... just wait for the N86 photo quality post.
  • lysine · 4 months ago
Hard to say. I still love my N82.

I'd personally like an E72 with a capacitive touch screen instead of that optical mouse.

Maybe the N97 Mini is a good way to go?

    Saludos

until nokia won't give a Samsung OMNIA HD competitor, they can sink into job-cuts and profit loss for all that I care.

I'm holding back because of a) the xenon flash, and b) i prefer a bar phone.
  • Mike Macias · 4 months ago
I'm also curious to see what the next bar phone will have.
  • alexismil · 4 months ago
Well, I'm still using my N82 as my main device, mainly because my N97 hasn't arrived, but after it arrives I'm planning to go to a nokia care and have my loudspeaker and my earspeaker fixed, because now they seem to love misbehaving from time to time, but in overal the Nokia N82 is the device that I will be in love for years, and so it will be in my pocket, I won't even care to carry it as my second phone.
  • Maynard · 4 months ago
"The first is the size of the aperture, which is much larger than normal and also variable, changing size depending on the amount of light available."

This means you should hold your phone still for a longer period, or you will get blurry pictures. This is not so handy.

i did check out these n82 vs n86 photo sample comparison here http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/10207_... and i must say imho, i can see the difference with the n86 photo quality in low light situations, and higher mega pixels. Honestly, with the flash set to auto on the n82, why would one have to worry about low light situations. When the xenon flash does flash, i don't think it gives off too much light in low light situations to ruin the shot. So, with that said i feel it hard for me (as far as the camera is concerned) to upgrade from my n82 of 2 years :) to a n86. Candy bar form factor, throw anywhere, do almost anything, and do it well. kinda an all purpose phone.
  • Mike Macias · 4 months ago
It's amazing how dedicated and happy N82 users are with their device. Nokia - duplicate this and make it better! It's a true power device.
  • FritzPinguin · 4 months ago
I will keep my N82 as long as there is no replacement with at least the same capabilities and especially a Xenon flash. I definetely need the navigation and the WLAN part, and the camera just fits well. The only problem is the battery, someone found a replacement for the BP-6MT with a bigger capacity?
  • Bart · 4 months ago
My next phone is probably going to be an Android phone. Since I kind of rolled into software development for that platform, I might as well get a phone that actually runs on it. But it's not going to be soon, so I'll see what's on the market in a few months.
I like my N82 a lot and I still think it was the best choice for me at the time with all its features, but I'm not a Nokia fanboy, and symbian isn't all that great, especially from a developers point of view.
  • Shao · 4 months ago
I owned a n82 for 19 months and switched to n86. I made a brilliant decision, BUT, with a few "drawbacks":
    - i like candybar but couldn't wait until a new one is released with 8MPix and the price would drop enough
    - i miss xenon but i like better filming with (very powerful) led light
    - when using led's for video, the battery runs out quickly
    - i hardly wait for the firmware update (the battery meter isn't accurate)
All in all this is the only upgrade available now.
  • andro · 4 months ago
i still have my n82 ... and i think i won't go for n86...from my point of view they probably gonna make n87 which is gonna be the candy bar version of n86 with xenon...(remember what happen on previous nokia king "n95" they made n82 almost the same spec with n95 but with xenon and a candybar design...)...
but at the time being i think i'm gonna buy a RIM device, probably i'm going for Blackberry Bold.. cos i kinda need the service....but i'm not gonna get rid my n82...still irreplaceable...

I'm using a N82 for about 6 Months, i've tested lots of other mobiles with cameras (which is the important part for me). For me, the N82 is the best camera with 5M, but i'm not happy with the battery and i'm getting sick with the noise the keyboard and the other buttons make. Maybe i'm a little bit too sensitive with that point.

I'm not sure to change to the N86 - i think the price is too big for the changes i will have - but this would be the only mobile, i would choose at this moment. I'm not a big fan of a slider-phone, i'm not a friend of a display where i can see every little fingerprint.

On the other hand, a better battery, the FM-Transmitter and the bigger display (i'm using my phone for mobile internet more and more) would be a great gift for me.

So please, give me a N86 like Candy-bar phone !
  • Kosek · 4 months ago
OK we understand that the new Dual Led Technology of the N86 is neraly as good as the Xenon. BUT ONLY if u make spics on a tripod or with a smooth hand and the Objects are not moving around.

But i make active shots in the Disco and other active stuff. I am sure that the dual LED are going to disappoint me and i will have blurry pics because of the lack of XENON.

i hope nokia will release a Touch-devise with xenon flash. Besides itake the Satio or an other Xenon thing.
  • Peter · 4 months ago
Well, the screen of the N95 8GB is still bigger than the little display of the N86.... WTF is wrong with nokia??? where is the real "father" of the N95 8GB??? the N96 really sucks. CPU so slow and no 3D graphic chip.. and now this, the almighty N86 with the small screen of the N95 classic.............. this really sucks

And GSM is so slow, believe it or not.. even on my K850 has 3G and it works better.... I´ve got 2 cellphones ^_^
  • Yabai.Youth · 4 months ago
Whoa there Kosek, you mean "pics"?
  • flopjoke · 4 months ago
the N86 camera has really interesting specs but no matter how the pics turn out in low-light.. Xenon flash is something entirely different. Sometimes it's the best thing that happened to N82. There's just one prob with N82.. the battery life! Other than that.. I'm still amazed by my N82. N97 is just an upgrade over the 5800. The touch screen is pretty good but not my device. N86 is a slide phone. I'm really waiting for the next sleek candy bar device WITH a Xenon flash and longer battery life.
  • juanchom · 4 months ago
As commented in some forums and symbian websites, N86 was an update for the great N95. I think I'm going to wait for N82's update to see what Nokia comes with!!!
  • garynbc · 4 months ago
Personally, my opinion of N86 or other latest model opting out the xenon flash was due to Nokia's marketing strategy. Everyone should agree with me that if N86 were to have xenon, it would very much be so called the "ulitmate phone". Then everyone will be going after N86, then what happens to the rest of the new release? They need to have something better, cost of research had to be increased to overcome that ultimate phone.

Hence, Nokia or all other brand had purposely avoid doing the ultimate phone. To me N82 was the closes to ultimate. However, everyone would agree with me that the design was kinda of bulky and ugly. So makes it unappealing to certain people. Take 6200c for another example. Poor battery life and absent of wifi. You think Nokia can't put those things in? Marketing strategy was my opinion. Just my 2 cents.

I really longed for N97. Aside from the features, I am really amazed by its look and sleek design. Simple yet classy!
  • Ed · 3 months ago
I'm still loving my N82. I've already had slider cable issue with sliders. The N86 looks incredibly cheap and quite hideous. Features-wise, it's not that much of an improvement. The N97 would be swell, but I do have my limits on how much I'll spend on a device like this. gsmarena still shows the N82 with better ratings than the N97 & it is a slider.

If I do get another any time soon, it will probably by an E71 because the tiny keys on the N82 are getting old. Entering some passwords or switching to number mode is tedious and tired. I'd also like to be able to edit documents as well.

I love the black n82 which I've had for one year. I look at most new devices coming to market however haven't as yet wet my pants wanting or waiting to buy a new phone. I really like size and form of the n82 and the fact that everything just works for me, giving me a reliable and capable phone and multifunction device. A mature firmware version really should not be overlooked as we have seen with n97 and well most devices. What do I crave? I'd love to look at maps and movies and web on a bigger screen but I don't want a larger device so I could still live without, and I don't like the keypad, so let me dream and have a widescreen n82 with touch input, please!
  • samb0 · 3 months ago
I think I'm starting to get dead pixels on my n82..:( One day I went to the gym, finished my workout checked my phone, looked fine, checked it after I showered and I had 2 lines that just keep getting bigger by the day..I love this phone though so I won't part with it any time soon. I would love to get an n97, but it's out of my range right now. And who knows, by the time they drop the price on that, they might have an actual n82 upgrade w/ xenon flash, then I would go after that aha.

I've been agonising about my next phone. I do love my N82, but I'd like something that's a little more serious this time, with better email capabilities. The HTC Diamond2 has been tempting, as has the Omnia 2, but I'm not convinced by those big touchscreens. I'm finally starting to settle on the Nokia E72. My friend bought an E71 at the same time that I got my N82, and I was blown away by the look and feel of the E71 - it's an incredibly classy phone. The E72 features a better camera, but no proper flash - but sadly you can't have everything.

There's a part of me that suspects the iPhone 3GS really is the best phone out there, but I'm IN DENIAL and intend to suppress that part of me with every ounce of strength I have. :-)

Here in Brazil, where an N97 costs R$ 2400.00 equivalent to U$ 1,500.00 I do not want to switch cell phone ever again. :)

Maybe the N900, if it is going to be released here...
  • Christina · 3 months ago
I'm battling every day whether to get an N86 or keep my N82. I take photos in relatively low light of my kids, who move a lot. Would the shutter speed help in this case? The Xenon is too bright and I get kids with their eyes involuntarily closed because of the freeze frame. Plus I like that you can use the LED for video.
  • Ed · 3 months ago
Christina - "Battling every day" ;-) 'Spoken' like a true mobile techie. The N86 doesn't have much on the N82 to make it worth the effort or money. Beyond 5mp, the only difference is size, not quality. You can adjust whether or not the Xenon flashes of not because I know there are times when it does comes in handy. For the most part, LED video lights aren't substantial enough. What's more, the N86 is a slider. It's not too difficult to damage the flex cable in a slider. They just aren't as sturdy. The N86 also looks very cheap. If you're going to spend that much for a phone, you might go to Amazon and check out the price of the N900. You can do a thorough side-by-side comparison of the N86/N82 or N86/N900 at gsmarena.com. I wouldn't waste my money on the N86. It's not an improvement.
  • adityasinghvi · 3 months ago
let's be honest Mike... all of that is just regular Marketing and PR speak for the regular customers asking that question.

The fact remains that N82 was a phone that was 'almost perfect' and recreating a product that is as good and maybe even better with an awesome camera would mean that Nokia would not have repeat purchases from people... Why would you want to change your phone if it did everything wonderfully.

Who would buy the next 8MP devices and the 12MP even?

Nokia doesn't mind losing a small flock of customers if it can gain a bigger flock... That is, according to me, a very bad decision.

Nokia N86 has become one of the favorite among all cell phone users. It has an attractive design. The image quality is very much satisfying. It is very easy to use and has a good speed. The picture quality is mind blowing. It is a bit pricey. This phone is specially meant for Nokia fans. For more details refer http://www.techsoft.org/review-of-the-nokia-n86...

N900! for sure is my next. First I wanted the N97 but after I've seen the N900 I've decided. From my point of view the bigger screen and the linux OS made decide upon N900.
I presently own a N82 and I'm fully satisfied with it.

Keep the good work with the web log guy.
I'll be expecting your release of the N900 fanatics website. ;)

I loves my N82, but there's more to a device than Xenon. Processor speed, Flash 9.4, screen size, RAM, FM transmitter & a hardware QWERTY (no more predictive text on a rice grain pad). This is what the N900 is.

The N97 was given a good enough process speed and the N86 is kinda ugly. Besides, 12mp won't improve photo quality. It will only make poster-sized photos & who wants those?

There is finally a true upgrade to the N82. That would be the N900.
  • Mike Macias · 1 month ago
Very good points. I'm using the N97 right now and I'm very happy with it.
I'm also looking forward to trying the N900.
